The Unsung Hero
Rajaram Kaka
Undoubtedly, he was a silent player. His contribution was never in the open, but it was always there. At times of jubilation, by the cracking of witty anecdotes. At times of need, by meeting the requirements behind the screen. The only person with whom I could share conversations from PG Wodehouse. Or get into real arguments on politics, with no hard feelings whichever way it ended.
Despite the age difference of a whole generation, he gave us the liberty to treat him more like an elder brother, allowing complete freedom in our relations with him. His happiness at seeing us, either at our place or his place, was so evident and visible in the brightening of his face when we met. Every child in the family thought he had a special liking towards him or her.
His affection and respect for his parents was phenomenal. He was the second right hand and saviour for my grandma, his mother, who relied mostly on him for all her urgent needs. The most dedicated son on earth, he never failed her. His visits to our house dropped only after her demise.
Soft spoken and gentle, he was the darling of his clients and friends. Magnanimous, he never pressed for money even where it was due, and it is said he could have made a fortune had he remained just a little firm. For one who as a professional civil engineer and licensed surveyor, got building plan approvals for, and also built, countless houses big and small, he took a long time to get his own house, which when he did was only as modest as himself.
For a person loved and liked by so many, it is cruel of fate to have not only snatched him from us, but also prevented people, in the form of the fast spreading Covid-19 pandemic, from gathering to mourn his loss and share thoughts in person. It is hard to believe a year has passed. As we observe the first year of his passing, I am sure he will always be remembered for his gentleness, generosity and geniality. May God keep him as happy and jovial near Him as he was here.
